AREA OF EXPERTISE
Professor Djukanović specialises in COPD’s (chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases) such as bronchitis, emphysema and asthma.
The theme running through all research is questioning what makes these conditions so severe and how both established and new treatments/drugs work.
RESEARCH AIMS
One of Dr Djukanović‘s main aims is to improve early diagnosis by creating reliable tests using expelled air and sputum in order to identify any tell-tale signs of asthma in the very early stages.
Over the past 12 years Dr Djukanović has been the principal investigator in many of the major clinical trials of asthma. Many findings have resulted in exciting new drugs and treatments for asthma.
As head of the Inflammatory Cell Biology Group (one of the divisions within AIR) Dr Djukanović has also headed a major research programme into identifying genes in COPD’s. This has involved taking samples of lung tissue via bronchoscopy to analyse these cells.
MEDIA INTEREST
Dr Djukanović is an internationally respected specialist in asthma, bronchitis and emphysema. He is regularly invited to speak worldwide and is often in demand for media interviews.
