PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
- Joint founder of the full-time Allergy and Severe Asthma Clinic based at Southampton General Hospital.
- Deputy Chairman of the Health Advisory Board of the British Allergy Foundation and advisor on allergy to both the British Allergy Foundation and the National Asthma Campaign.
- Medical Editor for Allergy News and The Allergy Journal.
- Co-author of ‘Low Allergen Living’, a book published by Mitchell Beasley. Also author of over 100 publications in Scientific Respiratory and Allergy Journals and contributor to textbooks on allergy, asthma and
rhinitis.
- Has been a contributor to British, European and World Health Organisation guidelines on the management of rhinitis in addition to contributing to other British Society of Allergy guideline publications.
- Working party member for the Royal College of Physicians report on the Provisions of Allergy Services within the UK
- Was the medical advisor to the National Asthma Campaign ‘low allergen house’ which was exhibited at the Chelsea Garden Show.

AREA OF EXPERTISE
Dr Howarth carries out research through clinical trials and laboratory-based investigation to discover more about the causes and treatments for asthma and rhinitis (commonly known as hayfever although there are several triggers of
rhinitis, not just pollen). He then uses this knowledge on the wards and through his specialist clinics to help treat patients with difficult asthma, respiratory and non-respiratory allergy.
RESEARCH AIMS
The focus of Dr Howarth’s research is to understand how and why asthma becomes so severe. Finding new ways to monitor and improve the damage caused to lungs through severe asthma is also a main area of study.

Dr Peter Howarth is an internationally respected specialist within the field of rhinitis & severe asthma. He is a regularly called upon by the national media to give interviews regarding expert advice on all aspects of asthma and allergies.
