  • Director of the IIR (Infection, Inflammation & Repair) research division based at the University of Southampton School of Medicine 
  • Advisor to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Skin 
  • Founder Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences since 1998 
  • Member of the Association of Physicians. 
  • Previous chairman of the National Eczema Society’s Scientific Board 
  • Former President of the European Society for Dermatological Research for four years 
  • Former chairman of The British Society for Investigative Dermatology for three years

AREA OF EXPERTISE
Allergies and the skin e.g. eczema, contact dermatitis and drug-related allergies which result in skin disorders. His group has made a breakthrough developing a laboratory blood test to help in the diagnosis of drug allergy.

RESEARCH AIMS

  • To understand why some individuals are more susceptible than others to the development of skin allergies – for instance, why only certain individuals become allergic to chemicals 
  • The understand the role of the immune system in inflammation skin diseases such as psoriasis 

Professor Friedmann’s research has the ultimate aim of understanding disease to develop more effective therapies and/or cures.

Professor Friedmann is an opinion leader in his field at both a national and international level. He is regularly in demand by the national and local press regarding not just skin allergies but a host of skin-related topics.
