An Evaluation of the Sharp Healthcare Air Purifier
Graham Rayner
I have been given the opportunity to evaluate the recently launched Sharp FU-40SEK Plasmacluster Ion Air Purifier which the supplier claims offers significant improvement to the breathing performance of those suffering from respiratory difficulties. It produces positive and negative ions, surrounded by large numbers of water molecules, known as cluster-ions. When released into the air they attached themselves to microparticles thereby deactivating them. the machine has several modes of operation and fan speed. To act in different situations like; smoke, pollen, odours etc.
I often wake with mild rhinitis and congestion, so tried this equipment in my bedroom.
- On 3/5 days, overnight rhinitis was almost eliminated.
- Reduction in congestion, was less noticeable.
- Removing it from the bedroom showed increases in morning sneezing etc. However, the difference was less quantifiable than I hoped for.
- A further 5 day test in the bedroom again showed some improvement but less convincing than in week one.
On balance, this air purifier offered some benefits but a longer 30 day comparative trial clearly necessary.
Costs £300 with a further £85 to replace the filters.
