Saddle sore – but worth it!

Nick Mills, from Hampshire, cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats to celebrate his 40th and to raise money for AAIR.
“I chose AAIR because one of the ex school pupils from my daughter’s school died last year of an asthma attack, aged just 18 or so years old. I know other people with asthmatic children, and so this seemed appropriate.” The ride took 14 days and covered 961 miles. “Thanks to people’s generosity I expect to raise about £800. Although it went well I was very sore by day ten, so rest assured people got their monies worth out of me! It’s also a great way to lose about a stone!”

Lions and Bull unite

Thanks to Blackmore Vale Lions and Denise and Ian Roome (landlords of The Bull Tavern in Dorset) for a £1000 donation. The couple nominated AAIR to benefit from their pub raffle and The Lions kindly topped up the amount to £1,000.

Double award for excellence in teaching AND learning
Top student wins the Holgate AAIR Prize for Allergy
While course director wins Vice Chancellors Teaching Award

The MSc Allergy programme at the University of Southampton is one of two MSc allergy course in the world, providing in-depth study of allergic disease for post graduate students. And this year has seen both its programme director and one of its students win recognition for excellence in their field.
The student award went to paediatric allergy nurse Debbie Marriage. Named after Professor Stephen Holgate and The AAIR Charity, the ‘Holgate AAIR prize for Excellence in Allergy’ recognises students who are awarded a distinction for their MSc Allergy. Debbie is only the second person to receive the accolade which was named after world renowned figure in the fight against asthma and allergic disease - Professor Stephen Holgate.
In presenting the award Professor Holgate, who is also president of AAIR, said: "What an extraordinary mark of achievement! Debbie has achieved the very highest standard in this postgraduate degree, is a brilliant pediatric allergy nurse and a marvelous and much valued Mum to 3 children. It is a privilege and pleasure to be able to acknowledge this with the Special Prize for 2010.”
Securing further recognition for this unique course was Dr Judith Holloway PhD who is the Programme Director. Dr Holloway received the Vice Chancellor Teaching Award which recognizes her outstanding contribution to education and celebrates teaching which is inspirational, innovative or of a particularly high standard.
In receiving her award Dr Holloway, who is also an AAIR ambassador said: “We have a fantastic team here at Southampton, and a unique course that is teaching doctors, nurses and dietitians from the UK, Europe and the World about how to diagnose and treat allergy. Our students go out into their practices, and are able to pass their knowledge on to the colleagues, patients and their families. I am incredibly proud to lead the MSc Allergy programme, and this Award is great recognition of our teaching team and all that we have achieved recently.”
Congratulating Dr Hollow. Professor Holgate, added: "This is a truly amazing achievement that clearly recognises the quality of postgraduate teaching in Allergy that Judith Holloway has developed in her special Masters Course at Southampton. I would like to add my very sincere congratulations for a well deserved and brilliant achievement".
Debbie, from Bristol, took 4 years to complete the modular course which she hopes will support her work as a paediatric allergy nurse at an allergy clinic for children. “We arrange allergy testing to diagnose allergies, create action plans, arrange treatment and follow-up with schools. Having such an autonomous system creates a much smoother service for the patients. I would definitely recommend this course. I have learned so much, not just from the teaching but also being able to share ideas with others on the course which has been very interesting. I had no idea there was an award so it was a really lovely surprise. I would like to thank Judith for being so supportive and for being so enthusiastic which has made such a difference.”
As well as the award Debbie received a cheque for £250 from AAIR.

WORLD ASTHMA DAY
Local pupils and teachers became more ‘asthma aware’ as they helped AAIR mark this year’s World Asthma Day on Tuesday May 4th.

Schools were invited to the pioneering asthma research unit at Southampton General Hospital to learn more about asthma, its causes, effects and treatments. They met top asthma expert Dr Peter Howarth, took part in interactive asthma tests, received asthma literature and toured the state-of-the art Brooke Laboratories, home to pioneering asthma research.

The schools were all involved with the AWAAIRE Bear Project, which was launched by AAIR supporter Nigel Foss in memory of his daughter Vikki. Vikki was a trainee teacher who died of asthma in 2008 aged just 22. She had bought a teddy bear to take into her new classroom, her father Nigel, adopted the idea and combined it with an asthma awareness message (full details at www.awaairebear.co.uk)

Teaching assistant Pam Jones from St Paul’s Catholic Primary School said: “The children have enjoyed learning more about asthma and it’s been good to get a better understanding of asthma. Asthma is so prevalent in children now and school staff spend so much time with children it helps for schools to be more asthma aware."

AAIR would like to thank teachers and pupils from Fenhurst Junior School, St Paul’s Primary School, The Hayling College and Mill Rythe Infant School.

THE WORSHIPFUL THE MAYOR AND MAYORESS OF TEST VALLEY
Highlight of the year

April 17th marked the Mayor of Test Valley’s fundraising calendar highlight with their final event, a Spring Ball.
Around 150 attended the evening, set in the unique surroundings of The Army Air Museum in Middle Wallop.
AAIR would like to take this opportunity to thank Mayor Cllr Ian Hibberd for nominating AAIR, his wife Teresa and their team for all their hard work in organising so many charity events throughout the Mayor year.

Unveiling of Memorial Tree

AAIR supporter Brenda Jolly unveiled the stunning memorial tree commissioned by AAIR in memory of her son Daniel who died of asthma.
When Brenda Jolly and her family were overwhelmed with generous donations from fund raising events and memorial donations from Daniels friends she contacted AAIR.
As well as a donation into the research work supported by AAIR, it was agreed part of the money raised would be used to create a Tree of Life in Daniel’s memory. The beautiful 7ft stainless steel tree takes pride of place outside the Brooke Laboratories – the site of pioneering work into asthma research supported by AAIR
On it’s branches will hang ‘memorial fruit’ in the shape of engraved discs inscribed with the names of other victims of asthma, allergic disease and related respiratory condition who had made memorial donations to AAIR.

Friends who worked with Daniel Jolly marked the anniversary of his death by
donating £535 to AAIR. Staff at Pizza Hut in Hedge End raised the money after employee Alisa Roberts suggested they donate their weekend tips to the AAIR Charity. Staff said: “Everyone thought it was a lovely idea. Dan was a really well-like team member and friend, we all miss him.”
